What to Wear for Rafting on the Tara (and What to Leave Behind)

The good news: the operator provides the important kit. On the Tara trips listed here you are given a wetsuit, neoprene boots, a life vest, a helmet and a paddle. What you bring is mostly about what goes underneath and what you want afterwards.

Provided by the operator

  • Wetsuit
  • Neoprene boots
  • Life vest
  • Helmet
  • Paddle

That list applies to the 14 km and 36 km trips and the special two-day trip. On the family day vests and helmets are provided and wetsuits are handed out when conditions call for them. For the 18 km Brštanovica trip the listing does not specify gear, so confirm when booking.

Under the wetsuit

  • Swimwear. The simplest base layer.
  • A thin synthetic top if you feel the cold. Avoid cotton: it stays wet and cold.
  • Nothing with sharp buckles or zips that can rub under neoprene.

Glasses, jewellery and phones

  • Glasses: use a strap or a sports band, or leave them behind if you can manage without.
  • Jewellery: leave rings and earrings in the car. Cold water shrinks fingers and rings slip off.
  • Phone: leave it behind or use a proper waterproof case. On the 14 km trip the crew photographs every boat under the Đurđevića Tara bridge.

Sun and cold

Put on water-resistant sunscreen before you leave; your face and the backs of your hands are exposed. The water is cold even in summer, and on a long day the canyon shade adds to it. A warm layer for afterwards makes the ride back much more pleasant.

Bring for afterwards

  • Towel
  • Dry clothes and shoes
  • A bag for wet swimwear
  • Water and a snack for the drive
  • For two-day trips: something warm for the evening at camp Brštanovica
