Spring: high water
When the snow on Durmitor and the surrounding mountains melts, the Tara carries far more water. The current is faster and the waves are bigger. This is the season people who want a lively river look for. It is also when water levels change quickest, so operators check conditions each morning.
Summer: the busiest months
By mid-summer the level usually drops and the river becomes calmer. Days in the canyon are long and warm, the swimming stops are more inviting, and this is when most families go. It is also the busiest time, so enquire early for July and August dates, especially for groups.
The water stays cold even then. It comes from mountain springs, including the Ljutica spring where the boats stop, and the wetsuit is there for a reason.
Autumn: quieter
Early autumn brings fewer people and cooler air. Autumn rain can raise the river again. The canyon colours are at their best, but days are shorter, which matters more on the seven-hour 36 km trip than on the 14 km trip.
What the operator publishes
Tara Kula Raft publishes one price per trip and does not list season dates or seasonal prices. So the practical answer is: pick your dates, then ask on WhatsApp whether the trip is running and what the water is doing.
If the weather turns
Rain on its own does not stop a rafting trip; you are getting wet regardless. What matters is water level. If the guide decides on the day that conditions are not safe, the operator cancels and you choose a full refund or a new date at no extra cost. If you cancel yourself, do it more than 24 hours ahead to get your money back.
Matching the month to the trip
- Families with children: summer, on the family day or the 14 km trip. Ask about ages first.
- First-timers: summer or early autumn, 14 km or 18 km.
- Stronger paddlers: spring, and consider the full day or a two-day trip.
Questions and answers
What is the best month for Tara rafting?
For the biggest water, spring after the snowmelt. For warm days and a calmer river, mid-summer. For fewer people, early autumn. Always confirm with the operator that trips are running on your dates.
Does Tara rafting run when it rains?
Usually yes. Trips are cancelled for unsafe water levels, not for rain. If the operator cancels, you get a full refund or a new date.
Is the Tara cold in summer?
Yes. It is fed by mountain springs and snowmelt, so the water stays cold. Operators provide wetsuits.
