What to Do in Durmitor: Rafting, Lakes, Peaks and Canyons

Durmitor is the mountain massif around Žabljak in northern Montenegro, and most of it is national park. Rafting the Tara is the headline, but it is worth staying for more than one day. Here is what there is to do, sorted by how much time it takes.

Half a day or less

  • Black Lake (Crno jezero). The best-known of Durmitor's glacial lakes, a short walk or drive from Žabljak, with a path around the shore.
  • Đurđevića Tara bridge. The 1940 arch bridge over the canyon, about 170 metres above the river. There is a zip line beside it; the operator lists €45 for a 740-metre cable.
  • Jeep safari, Tara canyon. About 2.5 hours, €60, to viewpoints over the canyon, the monastery of St Archangel and the Ljutica spring, for two to eight people per vehicle.
  • Horse riding on Durmitor with certified instructors, €40.

A full day

  • Tara rafting. From €60 for 14 km to €120 for the 36 km full day through the deepest part of the canyon.
  • Bobotov Kuk. At 2,523 metres the highest peak in the massif; a long day's hike for fit walkers in good weather.
  • Nevidio canyoning. A full day in the narrow Nevidio canyon of the Komarnica river, with specialist gear and guides, €120.
  • Jeep safari, Ring of Durmitor. Four to five hours around the massif via high passes and the Sušica canyon.

Two days or more

The two-day rafting trips with a night at camp Brštanovica are the way to spend more time in the canyon itself. Combined with a day for Black Lake and a hike, three nights in Žabljak is a comfortable plan.

Where to stay

Žabljak is the base: shops, restaurants, and most accommodation, plus the rafting operator's office. For the trade-offs between sleeping in Žabljak and down by the river at Šćepan Polje, see where to sleep the night before.

Winter

In winter Durmitor becomes a ski area, with the Savin Kuk slopes near Žabljak. Rafting is a warm-season activity; ask the operator about dates.
