Rafting the Tara from Kotor or Budva: Routes, Timing and Where to Stay

Most visitors to Montenegro stay on the coast, and the Tara is in the far north. It is possible to raft it from Kotor or Budva, but the drive shapes the day, so it helps to plan around it.

How far it is

From Kotor or Budva to Žabljak is roughly three hours by car, sometimes more in summer traffic. The usual route goes inland through Nikšić and then north to Žabljak. A slower but spectacular alternative follows the Piva canyon road through Plužine towards Šćepan Polje, with a long series of rock tunnels.

Transfers are not included

None of the trips listed on this site include transport from the coast. The operator offers pickup from accommodation in the Žabljak area and starts from its office there, but getting to Žabljak is up to you: your own car, a rental, or a separately booked transfer.

Option 1: stay a night in Žabljak

This is the easiest plan. Drive up in the afternoon, sleep in Žabljak, and join a morning trip. The 14 km trip has its first start at 9:30 and two more later in the day, and the 36 km full day runs 9:30 to 17:00. You also get an evening near Black Lake and the Durmitor massif.

Option 2: a long day trip

Leaving the coast very early can get you to Žabljak for a later start on the 14 km trip. Ask the operator for the times of the second and third departures before committing. Expect around six hours of driving for the day on top of the rafting.

Option 3: make it a two-day trip

If you are going to drive three hours each way anyway, the two-day trip with a night at camp Brštanovica turns the drive into part of a short holiday.

On the road

  • Mountain roads are narrow and slow; plan by time, not by kilometres.
  • Fuel up in larger towns such as Nikšić, Plužine or Žabljak.
  • Have your passport if you might cross into Bosnia and Herzegovina at Šćepan Polje.
  • Save the operator's number, +382 69 202 254, in case you are delayed.

If you arrive late, the trip may leave without you: the operator treats late arrival like a same-day cancellation, which is not refunded. Build in time.
