Family Rafting in Montenegro: Which Tara Trip Works with Children

Rafting the Tara is one of the few activities in Montenegro that children remember for years. The question is which trip suits your family, and what to ask before you book.

Two trips that suit families

The family day (€120 per person) is built for mixed groups. It starts at 9:00 in front of the operator's agency in Žabljak with a packed breakfast, includes about three hours of rafting from Brštanovica to Šćepan Polje and about four hours of jeep safari, and ends with lunch in a restaurant. Vests and helmets are provided, and wetsuits when needed.

The 14 km Durmitor trip (€60, children under 12 pay €50) is shorter and flexible: three starts a day, the first at 9:30, pickup from accommodation in Žabljak, a stop at the Ljutica spring and a swim and photo break.

Ask about ages first

The operator does not publish a minimum age for any trip. That is a question to ask, not an invitation to assume. When you enquire, give the exact ages of your children and whether they swim, and let the operator say what is suitable on your date. Water levels change through the season, so the answer can depend on when you go.

Which season

The river is usually calmer and the days warmer in mid-summer, which most families prefer. Spring snowmelt makes it faster and colder. See the best time for rafting.

Tips that make the day easier

  • Sleep in Žabljak the night before rather than driving from the coast in the morning.
  • Bring a full change of warm clothes and a towel for each child.
  • Snacks and water for the ride back.
  • Talk through the briefing with children beforehand: sit where the guide says, hold the paddle as shown, and in the water lie on your back with feet forward.
  • Remember the cancellation rule: free more than 24 hours before the start. If a child is unwell the evening before, cancel then.

If some of you would rather not raft

Durmitor has plenty for non-rafters: Black Lake, horse riding (€40), and jeep safaris. See what to do in Durmitor.
